Zambia joined the international community in marking the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, honouring serving personnel, remembering fallen peacekeepers and reaffirming the country’s commitment to international peace and security.

The commemoration brought together government officials, diplomats, United Nations representatives, members of the defence and security services and development partners to reflect on the role peacekeepers continue to play in conflict prevention, civilian protection and peacebuilding efforts around the world.

Representing the Government of Zambia, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Maambo Hamaundu, paid tribute to the courage and dedication of Zambian peacekeepers while reaffirming the country’s support for United Nations peacekeeping operations.

“Peace is not achieved by chance. It requires commitment, sacrifice, unity and the courage of those who serve selflessly for the good of humanity,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the United Nations, Acting UN Resident Coordinator in Zambia, Clement Peter Lasuba said this year’s commemoration served as a reminder of the collective responsibility required to build and sustain peace.

“This theme is a call for unity and a reminder that our future hinges on our ability to work together in investing in peace-building initiatives,” said Dr Lasuba.

The observance highlighted the importance of partnerships that underpin modern peacekeeping operations, bringing together governments, regional organisations, the United Nations, civil society and local communities in support of peace and stability.

Participants also reflected on the sacrifices made by peacekeepers serving in some of the world’s most challenging environments. A moment of silence was observed in honour of all those who have lost their lives while serving under the United Nations flag.

Special recognition was given to two Zambian peacekeepers, Corporal Steve Muloke Sakachoma and Staff Sergeant Alick Banda, who will be honoured posthumously at United Nations Headquarters on 5 June during the annual ceremony recognising fallen peacekeepers.

Both soldiers served in the Central African Republic, where Zambia has contributed personnel to international peacekeeping efforts. Their recognition highlights both their individual sacrifice and Zambia’s continued participation in United Nations peace operations.

The commemoration also acknowledged the contributions of diplomatic partners, civilian personnel, development agencies and the media in supporting peacekeeping efforts and raising awareness of the role peacekeepers play in advancing international peace and security.

As conflicts and humanitarian crises continue to test global stability, the observance served as a reminder that peacekeeping remains one of the most visible expressions of multilateral cooperation. For Zambia, the day provided an opportunity to honour those who serve while reaffirming the country’s longstanding contribution to United Nations peace missions.
